Janet at Low Tide (Golden Hour, Kill Devil Hills)

"Janet at Low Tide (Golden Hour, Kill Devil Hills)"

It’s not warm, but it’s not quite cold either. An uncommonly beautiful beach afternoon. A day that feels like a moody 19th century landscape painting. There’s still humidity left over from this morning's drizzle, and even though it's sunny, a fog makes it impossible even to see her hotel from here. Waves come in and wash footprints away, just like anxiety. Just like all those mistakes from her past.

Janet looks out on a cold gray ocean, but the fog in front of the sun makes everything glow. She looks out and sees a bright spot on the water. She walks along farther, and then behind her she sees a second one. She realizes that the ocean was showing her where it would put the two rainbow ends if it had the chance.

You see a sight like that and you feel the need to remember it, to save it somehow. But she knows that even if you had those skills, you still wouldn't be able to capture it. The best you can do is to take it in and try and feel something. Really, deeply feel something. And then, maybe later, hope that you can go back and feel that same thing way when you’re making something beautiful of your own.
