"The Gratitudes of Night (Katherine)"
Laura's cat Phil proudly delivers a dead bird which he offers Katherine as a token of his affection and support. "Thanks a ton, Phil" Katherine says as she picks up his trophy by the leg with a paper towel and carries it to the trash can at the curb. In the nearby ocean, Laura swims alone on a night without a moon. With all her might she throws her swimsuit ashore but can't see it land about twelve feet short and wash back out to sea. Later she will sneak back across the road, past the trash can, to Katherine's house.
