"Sightings (Laura)"

She sees them around the neighborhood when she's walking her neighbor's dog, 3 or 4 just in the last month, all those within a couple of blocks of her place. Sometimes on the sidewalk, sometimes in the road, one propped against the dumpster behind that old apartment building on Bainbridge. They seem to appear and disappear, and one seems to be in different places on different days of the week.

When the older married man she sleeps with sometimes asks why she's late getting to the hotel, she pauses, takes a deep breath, and then tells him the truth. "Please don't read anything into me telling you this", she says, looking him straight in the eye. "I say this with no symbolism whatsoever. But every time I walk out of my apartment, I always seem to see husband pillows."
